Meanwhile, I found a most entertaining post on this topic, written by a very talented writer. I hope you take time to read it (if you're interested in homeless, and the idea they've made a home out of the rain by living underground, as I "get" they really do).
Here's that fascinating account: http://explorations.undercity.org/2008/04/seattle-searching-for-underground.html

Great read...I'll be checking the gratings in the sidewalk on Columbia Street next time I'm near there. Hmmmm.....
Haha this topic seems very interesting! Glad you are finding information!
PS - Love the new banner too!
Breath-e ~ What I "get" (intuitively) is that there ARE access points through PRIVATE basements into the "condemned" part of Seattle's underground. I also "get" that a few homeless have found respite there but they keep it very hush-hush and few others know about it.
Panademona ~ It's actually rather fun. I've gone on the very commercialized "Seattle Underground" tour before and it was interesting. Meanwhile ... what I get intuitively and all the "unkowns" are actually even MORE fascinating!
